Reading Reform Foundation's
TWENTY-FIRST ANNUAL CONFERENCE
For twenty years Reading Reform Foundation has hosted a conference for teachers and administrators on the teaching of reading, writing and spelling. This exciting day of expert-led workshops invigorates both new and seasoned teachers by presenting techniques and practical ideas that can be used immediately in their classrooms. Each conference begins with an inspiring keynote address. At this years conference held in October, Professor Barbara Foorman, Director of the Center for Academic and Reading Skills at the University of Texas, and Dr. Judith Hochman, Director of the Windward Training Institute in White Plains, New York, were the keynote speakers. Speakers in other years have included Frank McCourt, Jeanne Chall, Diane Ravitch, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Ramon Cortines, Fred Hechinger, Isaac Asimov, Leon Botstein, Arthur Ashe and Stanley Crouch.
After the keynote address, the continues with twenty-five workshops on a range of subjects, including basic reading, written comprehension, critical thinking, study skills, storytelling, and motivating young writers. Workshop presenters are lively, informed professionals whose hands-on experience is apparent in their presentations. They are education consultants, reading specialists, college professors or outstanding classroom teachers. Many presenters have long-standing relationships with Reading Reform Foundation; some participate as course instructors throughout the year.
The conference luncheon allows attendees the time to exchange ideas and teaching strategies. Each year Reading Reform Foundation honors one or more distinguished teachers who continue to use the multisensory techniques in which they were trained by Reading Reform Foundation in their classrooms. At the close of the day, participants are invited to a panel session where they engage workshop presenters with questions and further extend dialogue on the process of teaching reading.
