New York City Department of Education Contract

��������� The New York City Department of Education recently awarded Reading Reform Foundation a ��3-year contract for literacy instruction and professional development services, writing that Reading Reform Foundation of New York displayed [a] very good program plan, organizational capacity and demonstrated effectiveness.�

Twenty-First Annual Conference on Reading

��������� Almost 600 teachers and administrators gave up a day during a holiday weekend to attend our conference at the New York Hilton and Towers on Sunday, November 10, 2002 .

��������� This day included workshops on basic reading, content-area skills, comprehension, sentence writing, Shakespeare in the classroom, and the older learner.

��������� Dr. Linnea Ehri & Dr. Judith Hochman were the keynote speakers.

Administrators� Roundtable at the Conference

��������� 35 administrators from New York City public schools and districts heard the keynote speakers who reiterated the compelling national research that makes a strong case for the multisensory, phonetic approaches Reading Reform Foundation espouses.

��������� Administrators praised Reading Reform Foundation�s in-school teacher training and its effectiveness with teachers.

��������� Administrators encouraged Reading Reform Foundation to reach out to other school supervisors.

In-School Teacher Training Program

��������� 59 elementary teachers in 22 New York City public schools are participating in the program twice weekly

��������� 1,800 children will be served in their classroom during the 2002-03 school year.

Jumpstart Sessions

��������� 31 teachers who participated in the in-school teacher training program in previous years revitalized and refined their teaching techniques for the new school year in sessions with a consultant.

Graduate-Level Courses

��������� Reading Reform Foundation offers three graduate-level courses in multisensory, systematic approaches to the teaching of reading, writing and spelling during the winter semester, through an arrangement with the College of New Rochelle .

Workshops for Parents

��������� A new workshop series for parents, How Can I Help My Child Read?, was offered in January and February in conjunction with the New York Public Library.
