Teachers Ask:
"How can I expand my students' vocabularies and minds?"

Answer:

You can expand your students' vocabularies and their minds by doing projects that are full of information.  For example, studying Ancient Egypt leads to studying history, art, architecture, and geography.

Begin by reading books on Egypt  to the lower grades (1-3) or letting the upper grades (3-6) read the books themselves.

  • Get books on the life of the time.
  • Read about how the pyramids were built, what ancient Egyptian houses looked like, The Nile River and its importance in farming.
  • Make Egyptian head dresses or clothes that the children design themselves.
  • Learn about the religion and how it affected burial practices

Some vocabulary you and your students will need to understand:

Pyramid, triangle, bricks, mortar, temple, tomb, Pharoah, Nile River, flooding, papyrus

Research:

You can find books and kits at the The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City.  Your school library should have a kit from the Metropolitan Museum complete with lesson plans and slides for teachers' use.

This kind of teaching can take place all year and makes teaching and learning exciting and interesting!
